Lynyrd Skynyrd emerged from Jacksonville, Florida, and became one of the defining bands of Southern rock, known for their powerful three-guitar sound and songs such as “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Free Bird.”
The band’s story was forever changed on October 20, 1977, when their touring plane crashed near Gillsburg, Mississippi. Lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, backing vocalist Cassie Gaines and three others were killed. The surviving members carried an enormous loss, but the music—and its influence—continued.
Today, we’re remembering that history and turning up the energy of Lynyrd Skynyrd live.
